Beirut - Lebanon's Prime Minister Fouad Siniora has congratulated Finance Minister Jihad Azour for the "service delivery improvement" award that the ministry has received from the United Nations.

 

   


"You were able to overcome all political, institutional and organizational challenges that the public sector faces in Lebanon," Siniora said in a statement Monday.
"You were able to achieve great leaps in the modernization of the management of the value added tax system with an effort to improve taxpayer service," the prime minister added.
The ministry said it won the "taxpayer service" 2007 award in the category of improving service delivery.
The United Nations Public Service awards had three categories this year.
First category: Improving transparency, accountability, and responsiveness in the public service.
Seven countries won in this category.
Second category: "improving the delivery of services."
Five countries won in this category, including Lebanon, the United Arab Emirates and Morocco.
Third category: Fostering participation in policy-making decisions through innovative mechanisms.
Two other countries won in this category
The yearly competition is organized by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs to recognize institutional contributions to enhance the role, professionalism and visibility of the public service.
